click for photo tour Travel five minutes from downtown St. Andrews and you will find a magical place. Just a short drive across the ocean floor (down the aptly named, Bar Road) at low tide, takes you to the once summer residence of railway baron Sir William Van Horne.

Minister’s Island is named after the Loyalist Anglican minister, Reverend Samuel Andrews, who first settled the island in 1786.

Several buildings still remain on Minister's Island including:

  • The original stone house where Rev. Andrews lived with his family.
  • Covenhoven, the former summer cottage of Sir William Van Horne.
  • The seaside bathhouse where Van Horne painted and entertained.
  • The livestock barn - one of the largest in North America.
  • The original gardener's cottage.
  • A windmill which once powered the island.
A protected historic site, Minister's Island is open to the public by way of guided tours from May through October every year.
